ICOM konferansen adresserte et av museenes viktigste områder: lagring av museumsgjenstander. Fagansvarlig forvaltning, Jaroslav Bogomolov, representerte Museum Nord på konferansen som foregikk fra 29. til 31. oktober i Paris.
ICOM (International Council of Museums) er en internasjonal medlemsorganisasjon for museer og museumsansatte. Organisasjonen lager standarder og etiske retningslinjer som museer verden over følger. I UNESCO har ICOM en konsultativ status.
Lagring av museumsgjenstander
Årets ICOM konferanse i Paris samlet museumsfolk og forskere som jobber med samlingsforvaltning.
Fagansvarlig forvaltning i Museum Nord, Jaroslav Bogomolov, og Stephanie Backes presenterte utfordringer de konsoliderte museene har innen samlingsforvaltning – konservering, flytting, lagringsforhold, ressurser og riktig kompetanse. De snakket også om hvordan Otollitten skal fungere som en hub for Museum Nord samlinger.
Jaroslav og Stephanie var de eneste norske talere på agendaen. Fra Norge var det representanter fra kunstmuseet i Bergen og Nasjonalmuseet i Oslo.

In this paper we identify the challenges we have with collection care in a Norwegian consolidated museum with a view to solve them in a newly planned local storage facility that serves a larger region. We discuss how we are planning the logistics of the movement of objects, conservation issues, and competence required in order to solve the outlined challenges.
The Norwegian Museum Reform in 2004 that aimed to professionalise the museum sector led to the establishment of the consolidated museums – larger museum units consisting of several previously independent small(er) museums. Today there are 61 consolidated museums in the national museum network. The museums are spread all over the country and together they form a network that cares for, researches on and communicates the variety of Norwegian cultural heritage.
In general, the challenges faced by consolidated museums are a lack of a detailed overview of the collections, non-adequate storage conditions, non-satisfying state of preservation of the collections and a lack of professionals to take care of collections. Thanks to developments following the museum reform the focus on collection management, conservation and prioritisation of resource use is increasing.
Museum Nord is one of the three consolidated museums in Nordland County in the north of Norway. The institution is running 21 visitor facilities stretching for approximately 450 kilometres and takes care of ca. 81 000 objects, ca. 430 000 photographs, 780 art works, 105 vessels and 95 historical buildings. In only few cases Museum Nord is the owner of the objects, mostly the institution is providing the museum services for the owners of the facilities. A lack of sufficient collection care in several decades has entailed non-satisfying to bad preservation conditions of the objects. More than 40% of the historical objects are by now kept in non-adequate facilities. In addition, there is a general lack of personal resources regarding collection care.
An idea of establishing a centralised storage facility that would meet the challenges of collection care at Museum Nord had arisen, while working on the plans of a future national competence and research centre for cod and cod fisheries. The project includes the construction of a new museum building named Otolitten, consisting of exhibitions, storage facilities and an object conservation unit.
As a result, we will change our organisation model of collection care in the institution in order to create a model hub that serves the whole organisation.
New ways of working include processes around the logistics of the re-location of the collection, establishing a conservation lab that is fit for our purposes, planning of the new facilities considering conservation needs and work-flows. The new model hub will be finished in 2026 and the results will show us how successful our solutions for the re-organisation of collection care in a consolidated museum are.
The logistic of the re-location of the collection is challenging due to several aspects. Planning the organization of condition assessments of objects at different locations, establishing the conservation lab and prioritized movements of parts of the collection into the new storage rooms is under way. Otolitten will be finished in 2026 and the results will show us how successful our solutions for museum re-organization are.
