ABOUT THE PROJECT
Beneath the Surface in Lofoten
The Underwater Nature Trail is a project currently under development that aims to make life beneath the ocean surface more accessible, understandable, and inspiring for everyone. By sharing local knowledge, traditional craftsmanship, artisanal practices, and harvesting from the sea, as well as natural and culinary resources, the project seeks to foster greater interest in and responsibility for the ocean and local coastal heritage, while also strengthening awareness of Lofoten’s local arts and crafts and particular traditional practices.
The project will also highlight craft practices and aesthetic expressions connected to coastal culture, and make visible the relationships between nature, material use, and creative traditions. It is being developed in collaboration with local stakeholders and will serve both as a learning arena for nature-based experiences and as a platform for cultural heritage.
What is a Living Lab?
A Living Lab workshop is a space where people come together to collaborate, explore, and learn together around ideas or complex challenges. It is open to everyone, regardless of background, and aims to actively promote diversity.

The process consists of four stages:
- Problem framing – Bring your idea, rethink it, and explore its possibilities.
- Prototyping – Build a quick and simple version of the idea (an object, process, or experience).
- Testing – Test it with real users or audiences, see what works, and refine it.
- Dissemination – Share results and learnings so others can adapt, further develop, or scale them
