Rigid heddle weaving in Narvik

18 April 2024

On Wednesday 17 April, the first course evening in rigid heddle weaving took place at Narvik Museum! The course is organized in collaboration with Áhkánjárgga Sámesearvi/Narvik Sami Association and Duodjeinstituhtta Nordland, with course leader and duodje consultant Tone Elvebakk.

The course participants first got an introduction to duodji in our area, and which ribbons are common to use for the gákti in Ofoten and Sør-Troms.

Then course leader Tone went through how to calculate how long the warp must be, how to calculate how many threads to the warp needs, and how to thread up the loom.

Then it was time for the participants to choose what they wanted to weave, and set about making the warp and then threading their own loom. Next time we’ll start weaving!
