How can museums use digital dissemination?

Imagine the possibility of walking in the cities of the past, among the ancestors and cultural treasures? instead of reading about them. By recreating the Viking Age farms and medieval farms at Lofotr Viking Museum at Borg in Lofoten, we will be able to show a different storytelling than what is done today at the museum.

This is exactly what Elin Tinuviel Thorbergsen’s PhD project is about. The project “Cultural History Museum Dissemination and Location-Based Media” examines how exhibitions can be complemented with digital forms of dissemination to improve knowledge dissemination.

This spring, Elin has attended a course and learned about podcasts, and has then been involved in the recording of two episodes where she talks about her project. The first is: Future-proofing the Past | EXARC, and the other is How to Use Digital Dissemination in Museums in collaboration with Ekspedert, the museum podcast of Museum Nord in Ofoten.

In the podcast episode in collaboration with Ekspediert, Elin talks about the opportunities this type of technology can create for the dissemination of history at Lofotr Viking Museum and other museums.

She compares the challenge of creating a communication app with situated AR (Augmented reality) for a Viking Age and medieval landscape, with what it would be like to create situated AR for e.g. Navvy Town in Rombaksbotn during the construction of the Ofotbanen railway in the late 1800s and early 1900s, where you have photographs, maps and other sources.
