Earlier this year, the Institute of Marine Research invited SKREI Research Center and Museum Nord to contribute to an application to the Research Council’s programme “Collaborative Project to Meet Challenges in Society and Industry”. The COASTSUPPORT project will develop an online decision-making and support platform for coastal planning and management.
Coastal management balances multiple and conflicting objectives such as growth in marine economic sectors, increased supply of ecosystem services and conservation of ecosystems and biodiversity. This balancing act is left to decision-makers and planners in coastal and ocean management, who often have limited support and capacity to navigate through information floods and fragmented data. The Institute of Marine Research therefore proposes a collaboration between science, management and communication to develop an online decision support platform that integrates various data and information to assess trade-offs and synergies in aquaculture, societal benefits, environmental risks and conservation.
SKREI Research Center, together with the Institute of Marine Research, will also work with the Lofoten Council, Nordland Research Institute, the University of Tromsø, the Norwegian Institute for Nature Research, the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, Stockholm University, the Department of Planning at Aalborg University and the Norwegian Environment Agency during the project period from 2025 to 2027.
