Did you know that the fishing ports along our coast have been the lifeblood of many communities for over 150 years? Join us and explore the history of the ports that have helped save both lives and businesses along Norway’s coast.
Together with the Norwegian Coastal Administration, the Norwegian Coastal Administration Museum is now launching an exciting new online exhibition that takes you all the way back to the start of port development in the 1870s. Here you can join a journey through time and sea, and see how the ports have played a crucial role for the nation of Norway.
The online exhibition offers a rich collection of maps, photos, and films that allow you to experience the fascinating history behind the ports, through both old and new photographs. We highlight 15 selected “portraits” of ports from Vardø in the north to Brattestø in the south: Vardø, Hamningberg, Berlevåg, Kabelvåg, Østre Nesland, Skjærvær, Nordøyan, Alnes, Silda, Utsira, Skudeneshavn, Obrestad, Jøllestø, Østhasselstrand and Brattestø.
Here you can see the history and how they have developed over time, both geographically and technologically, in line with the changing needs of the fisheries and the peculiarities of the regions. In addition to showing the ports’ history, you will also get an insight into today’s activity and how the Norwegian Coastal Administration continues to ensure good port conditions for our coast.

This marks the end of a multi-year project from the Norwegian Coastal Administration Museum, and the goal is to make this important part of Norwegian coastal culture accessible to everyone. Other parts of the project have been an exhibition about the fishing port and the Norwegian Coastal Administration’s 150-year history in Kabelvåg. In collaboration with Trond J. Hansen, the Norwegian Coastal Administration Museum also published the magnificent book Molo in 2023. The powerful protectors of the Norwegian coast. Kristine Moltu of Museum Nord has been the leader of the project.
