Hurtigruten Museum nominated for EMYA 2025

20 November 2024

The Hurtigruten Museum has been nominated for the prestigious European Museum of the Year Award (EMYA) 2025. The nomination is a great recognition of the museum’s work to convey Hurtigruten’s rich history and cultural heritage, and its importance for both Norway and the world.

-This is a fantastic recognition that shows that we are in the museums’ Champions League as one of two Norwegian museums on the nomination list. We are Bodø-Glimt in the Norwegian museum world right now,” says Brynjar Pettersen, department director at Museum Nord.

EMYA was first awarded in 1977 and highlights museums that have excelled in their work to engage the public, preserve cultural heritage and offer innovative and educational experiences. The Hurtigruten Museum was selected from many candidates from all over Europe, and the nomination is a recognition of the good work put in by our talented team.

The nomination to EMYA is a milestone for the museum, and we look forward to participating in the further process towards the award ceremony in May 2025. The attention the EMYA nomination brings is a fantastic opportunity to continue to develop the museum as an important meeting place for culture, history and learning.

A long and demanding process

Getting on EMYA’s nomination list is a great achievement. To be considered for nomination, each museum undergoes a thorough and comprehensive process that starts with each museum submitting an application, which is then reviewed by an independent jury. The jury selects the most distinctive and interesting museums, both at national and international level. The museums that progress in this stage of the process are then visited by a jury member, who inspects the museum, photographs and writes a thorough report. Based on this, the museums are further assessed and the best are nominated for the award.

– We are incredibly happy and proud to have been nominated for this prestigious award,” says Geir Are Johansen, director of Museum Nord. The nomination is a result of the good work our team has put into creating a vibrant and dynamic museum that conveys Hurtigruten’s history in an engaging way. We see this as confirmation that the museum is on the right track in its work to strengthen both cultural heritage and the tourism industry in the region.

The Hurtigruten Museum – An international recognition

The nomination for EMYA clearly shows that the Hurtigruten Museum is of great importance both nationally and internationally. The nomination confirms the museum’s position as an important cultural hub in Europe, and underlines the quality of our offering, which is both engaging and innovative.

It is exciting to be part of the competition for the EMYA award, but we are already proud to have come this far. The Hurtigruten Museum has previously been recognized as one of the best maritime museums in Europe, and it is a great achievement to also be considered among the most distinctive museums in Europe. This shows that our commitment to creating memorable experiences is at a high international level.
