Klakksjorda – a gem in Bø

10 June 2025

There are many gems and nice places in Bø with a rich local history. Klakksjorda, for example, has been the largest Sami farm in Bø. Here, bumenn and nomadic people with 130 reindeer have lived side by side. Tjuppen and Sneisa are Sami place names and you will find Sami cultural monuments such as tent settlements, arran and turf huts. Many from here have Sami ancestry. Jens Steffensen (1891-1961) came from Klakksjord and had a Sami grandmother.

Now the shop at Odden is a tourist facility with a sauna and boat rental. Previously, there was a storehouse here and the goods were hoisted ashore with a winch. The goods were sold in bulk, so you did not buy more than you needed. People were fishing farmers and several were engaged in small game hunting and boat building. There has also been a ject setup at the innermost part of Jørnfjorden, at Oppsåta. This is also where the Queen of Jørland lived.

The youth team Nybrott built a village hall with timber from Bjørnøya and Knut Hamsun has been a teacher at Klakksjord. He comforted a little boy who had lost his father by pulling out a coin from behind his ear. Incidentally, the school at Klakksjord was the world’s best school, according to those who have attended it. It’s gone now, but students still come here. Thank you to the 8th grade at Bø secondary school for letting me join!

Cultural heritage tours and Get to know your local environment are one of Bø Museum’s offerings in The Cultural Rucksack.
