A new exhibition to mark Lofotr Viking Museum’s 30th anniversary

27 October 2025

Lofotr Viking Museum opened its doors in the summer of 1995. 2025 marks the museum’s 30th anniversary, and in this connection, we are happy to invite to the opening of the anniversary exhibition Fragments of History – 30 Years of Lofotr Viking Museum on Saturday 1 November 2025 at 12 p.m.

The event is free.

In the new temporary exhibition, you are taken on an exciting journey that began in 1981, when the first ceramic and glass fragments were found in the ground.

The museum’s history began with an archaeological discovery at Borg. Without the efforts of enthusiasts like Kåre Ringstad and Frik-Harald Bjerkli, the longhouse might not have been discovered. Without local forces, the Viking ship would not have been built, and the longhouse reconstructed.
The Lofotr Viking Museum is not just the story of a museum in Northern Norway, it is the story of how local commitment, knowledge and pride have created something truly unique.
Excavations from 1983 to 1989 uncovered the longest known longhouse from the Viking Age. The longhouse, which today overlooks the landscape at Borg, is a symbol of the wealth, strength and knowledge that characterized Vestvågøy during the Viking Age.
From here, people went out on trade and travels, and this was an important part of the foundation for the prosperity of Lofoten and Northern Norway.
The anniversary exhibition opens at 12 p.m. on Saturday, November 1st in the museum’s Visitor Centre. There will be entertainment and activities for the whole family.
We hope to see many familiar and new faces – please bring your friends and family to celebrate 30 years of history and community.
