In mid-November, Jonas Walsøe from SKREI Research Center received a jury from ? International Institute of Gastronomy, Culture, Arts and Tourism? on behalf of Museum Nord, in collaboration with Thon Hotel Svolvær and Destination Lofoten. The goal was to show how our region works with food culture, tourism, art and culture in interaction.
The jury visited several places in Nordland, but particularly highlighted SKREI, Thon Svolvær, Sami food culture and Lofoten Seaweed as impressive examples among many very good initiatives and actors in the region. They also pointed to the interaction between nature, climate, people and the finished product as a unique strength.
Furthermore, the jury describes Nordland as a region with exquisite local food, professional restaurants, skilled producers and good educational opportunities in food science. They add that Nordland’s sustainability lies in the identity ? which is not a trend, but springs from necessity and tradition.
The project “Nordland as a European Region of Gastronomy 2028” was initiated as a pilot project in 2024, led by NKMAT and funded by Nordland County Council and Innovation Norway. The prestigious title is awarded annually and corresponds to the designation of European Capital of Culture, but for food culture. The work up to 2028 will take place through professional groups and various programmes. For Museum Nord, this provides a unique opportunity to lift the food culture in all our regions and be an active dissemination arena for exciting food and cultural programs in the years to come.
