New Year’s greetings from SKREI

New Year’s greetings from SKREI

2025 has been an exciting year with many major milestones for SKREI and Museum Nord.

On the construction site, Sortland Entreprenør has worked steadily and without any major surprises, despite the fact that the Otolith is a complicated building. From the start of building works in late summer 2024 to the Minister of Culture Lubna Jaffery laid the foundation stone in May and until now, most everything has gone according to plan.

Out of the office window, the staff have gone from looking down at a large hole in the ground, to a skeleton of steel and glulam beams that gradually found its shape in the landscape. In November, we held a topping off ceremony to celebrate that the building is weatherproof, with the glass façade facing Vågakallen in place and surfaces are starting to be completed indoors. The otolith was designed by LPO architects.

There is also a lot of work going on behind the scenes that is not visible yet. Objects, content and exhibition texts are refined in collaboration with our skilled exhibition designers at Expology. In February, we will start assembling the new main exhibition inside the building.

SKREI has also completed a new visual profile that we look forward to using and has begun marketing, among other things, through talks with a number of tour operators. During three hectic weeks this autumn, we had 130 people attend viewing tours inside the building and are pleased with all the enthusiastic feedback we have recieved.

Museum Nord has hired new employees in four newly created positions, and is gearing up to receive an increased number of visitors. Leading up to the opening, we are working on a thousand small and large preparations that together will make SKREI a wonderful museum experience, that safeguards the great history of the Lofoten fisheries and how we in pact with the sea 💙

2026 will be an exciting year for SKREI – On 30 June, we open our doors to the public. The official opening event will be in late summer. Thank you for following us on the road to our new museum!
