It’s winter, and that means that it’s cod fishing in Lofoten! And if it’s cod fishing, then it’s cod liver oil steaming and Lofoten Fishing Day in the Norwegian Fishing Village Museum.
In 2026, we are preparing something special for you: five days of cod liver oil steaming, and finally a full day of celebration of the Lofoten fishery.
Week 11 we fire up the cod liver oil boiler and steam cod liver oil at the cod liver oil factory from Monday March 9th to Friday March 13th. Visitors get the opportunity to see how liver is turned into cod liver oil through the ancient process.
We use this cod liver oil steaming session to produce cod liver oil for the year. The Norwegian Fishing Village Museum works to keep traditions alive. The production and use of cod liver oil is one of these traditions that has been part of the coastal culture in Lofoten.
Friday the 13th will be a day full of experiences at the museum, when we gutt fish, demonstrate tongue cutting with the opportunity for the public to try for themselves, and of course a last day with the smell of cod liver oil and heat at the cod liver oil factory. A nice end to the cod liver oil vaping week.
