In week 12, we have had visits from students in the middle school from schools in Vågan in connection with The Cultural Rucksack. The students got through “SKREI! Yesterday, today and tomorrow?” explore and learn about the Lofoten fishery and the importance of cod for coastal culture. Along the way, we visited Espolin Gallery, Lofoten Museum and Lofoten Aquarium.
At Espolin Gallery, the students got to explore the unique expression of Espolin’s artwork, where he uses very special techniques to depict man’s encounter with the forces of nature and the struggle for existence along the Norwegian coast. The most exciting thing was probably to try the scratching technique the artist was known for. In the art workshop, the students got to create their own pictures with Espolin Johnson as inspiration.

Lofoten Museum offered the students a time travel 130 years back in time, where they got to familiarize themselves with the everyday life of the Skårungen through an interactive role-play. They got to explore the five-oared boat in the boathouse, imagine what it was like to sail north in barren conditions and finally come ashore. In Ørsnesbua, they got to try their hand at some crafts and weave their own keychains with hemp thread. And write their own Lofoten letters. There was a lot of laughter and a good atmosphere!
The trip continued to Lofoten Aquarium, where the students got to know the biology of the cod. And not least Skreidar! Here they learned about the migration of the cod from the Barents Sea. What are the most important prerequisites for good spawning conditions- namely the temperature of the water and access to food. In addition, they tried to guess what Skreidar himself would like to have on the dinner table. The visit ended in the cinema hall where the students saw the film “The Sea Dance”.

Educational days for both adults and children!
