Marianne Hansen from Sortland bibliotek launches Åsa Elstads new book Threads from the Past. The event is free, and is a collaboration between the library, Sortland Museum and Kulturfabrikken.
Articles of clothing and handicrafts can say a lot about the people who wore and made them – and the era they lived in. With a basis in archeological findings, documents, photos and items, Åsa Elstad examines textile use in the North of Norway through a thousand years. Every chapter has a recipe, a practical exercise for whomever wants to trace the works of the textile workers who preceeded us.
Åsa Elstad has an education in textile forming and a PhD in history, and is a former curator at Sortland Museum. She has written books and co-authored works on various topics such as handicrafts, clothing, coastal culture and fisheries, including Coastal Women in Norway, Fashion Lions and Homebodies, Northern Norwegian Cultural History, Nordland’s History and Norway’s Fisheries and Coastal History.
