Concert: Chiaroscuro

Saturday 22 February 2025 13:30 - 14:15
Welcome to a concert at the Espolin Gallery!

On Saturday February 22nd at 13.30, the Espolin Gallery and Nordland Academy of Arts and Sciences invite you to a matinee concert with harpsichordist Nikolai Endresen Dahl, with an introduction by curator Malin Overholth.

François Couperin is perhaps the harpsichord’s foremost poet. With an intricate sense of detail and contrast, his compositions, above all the character pieces, reflect human life and the entire emotional register. Among his largest suites is the eighth – huitième ordre – in B minor from his second book of harpsichord pieces. As a foretaste of François Le Grand’s masterpiece, we get to hear his uncle Louis Couperin‘s suite in D major; this is a deep and colourful collection of pieces that beautifully show the older Couperin’s full immersion in the sound world of the harpsichord.

Throughout his life, artist Kaare Espolin Johnson had a close relationship with Northern Norway, and described with great expressiveness the dramatic history of the region and the lives of the coastal people. Central to his motifs is man’s dependence on nature and the sea, and the struggle against the forces of nature. This is portrayed with dramatic elements of composition and technique, light and dark. Other, more poetic representations revolve around people’s relationships with each other. Kaare Espolin Johnson was plagued with poor eyesight from childhood. For a period of time he was blind in one eye and severely affected by cataracts in the other. Thus, he saw few colours, and consequently concentrated on lines and compositions, light and dark.

The Espolin Gallery in Kabelvåg has Norway’s largest collection of Kaare Espolin Johnson’s works. With this concert, Kaare Espolin Johnson’s visual contrasts are intertwined with Baroque music’s use of light and shadow, in a journey across time and artistic expression.

Three masters of chiaroscuro – the art of using light and dark!
