Lecture: A Multifaceted Past – Interactions Between the Sámi and the Vikings on Vestvågøy/Lofoten

Thursday 5 February 18:00 - 19:30
Oksfallet at Malnes/Gimsøystraumen

What were the relations between Sámi and Vikings in Lofoten really like?

In this lecture, archaeologist at the Sámi Parliament, Arne Håkon Thomassen, invites the audience into a nuanced picture of the Viking Age on Vestvågøya and in Lofoten. Drawing on archaeological finds and recent research, he sheds light on relationships shaped by trade, taxation, and everyday life.

Thomassen has extensive experience in communicating Sámi cultural heritage and has previously given lectures at both Øksnes Museum and Bø Museum. He is particularly concerned with showing how the past was diverse, and how Sámi and Norse societies lived side by side.

After the lecture, there will be time to ask Arne Håkon Thomassen questions, and a small tasting inspired by Sámi culinary traditions will be served.
