The Espolin Gallery has invited comic artists Judith Vanistendael and Eva Hilhorst to present their project and hold a drawing workshop on Saturday during Lofoten Art Open!

Exhibitions
In our collection exhibitions, the public can experience some of Kaare Espolin Johnson’s earliest drawings, his famous lithographs and fascinating works on paper in a mixed technique.

Watch documentary film
Experience the artist tell about his life and his sources of inspiration, as well as his most central motifs such as “Juksafiskere”, “Fylgje” and “The Bridge of Light”.

Create yourself!
Get inspired and create your own expressions: on Saturday you can join a drawing workshop from 13:00 to 15:00 with artists Judith Vanistendael and Eva Hilhorst. Judith and Eva will give a presentation about their work on the Storytelling project and talk about how they turn the information they find into compelling stories. Inspired by this, participants get the chance to draw their own comic stories in a one-hour workshop. Finally, we make copies so that the stories can be shared among the participants.

The rest of the weekend there will be the opportunity to create your own image in one of Kaare Espolin Johnson’s preferred techniques – scraperboard.

Judith Vanistendael is a comic book artist who has published several graphic short stories, while Eva Hilhorst is a graphic journalist and editor of the digital platform Drawing the Times. The two cartoonists work with graphic journalism, and have climate change as a joint project. Judith and Eve draw stories to make visible the invisible. They research ways to tell about climate change, fictional and non-fiction by meeting people and working on co-creation projects. This is their third visit to North Norway. They are artists in residence at Melbu at AiRV. On September 15, they will participate in this year’s Elvelangs festival.
