Welcome to a talk at Øksnes Museum Tuesday the 18th of October at 19:00! Johan Borgos is coming to the museum to talk about sami place names in the region.
Today, few Norwegians understand the Sami language, while most Sami people understand Norwegian. This is the result of many years of Norwegianization, making the Sami language what it is today. Sami place names are a valuable cultural heritage in many ways. They give testimony the Sami people’s use of the landscape in the past. The names also give information about the dialect used in the area. Today, they’re important to Sami identity through their symbolic value.
Johan Borgos (born 1939) is a historian, teacher and author of, amongst other works, local historical books like “Gård og slekt i Øksnes”. His talk is partly based on his book “Samer ved Storhavet”.
The talk is held in the exhibition room of the museum. There will be coffee and snacks!
