Cod drumming

John Andrew Wilhite has received a lot of attention for the project, where he, together with biologist Rebekah Oomen, examines the drum sounds of the cod during spawning. “Cod drumming” is both art and science, music and communication.

Now Wilhite will perform at the Lofoten Aquarium along with the renowned Alpaca Ensemble. This Thursday in the cod season, we invite you to an impromptu jam session in front of the cod aquarium, where cello and double bass meet the sound of the codfish. The public will also be able to hear more about the “Cod Drumming” project.

Free admission!

– About the musicians –
  • John Andrew Wilhite is a composer and musician based in Oslo. He often works on a large scale and across traditional disciplinary boundaries. His works have been performed at the Ultima Festival, the Norwegian Opera and the Munch Museum, among others. Currently, he is a PhD candidate at the Section for Improvised Music, Jazz and Folk Music at the Norwegian Academy of Music. Wilhite has led the scientific-artistic project  “Cod drumming” since 2018.
  • Alpaca Ensemble is a flexible ensemble of different compositions, with a core consisting of Else Bø (piano) and Marianne Baudouin Lie (cello). Alpaca initiates both large and small innovative projects within genre-breaking contemporary music, and develops a repertoire across established art forms. They were named Performer of the Year 2020 by the Norwegian Society of Composers.
  • Skrei – Gadus morhua, or the Northeast Arctic cod, has for thousands of years moved in from the Barents Sea towards the coast in northern Norway to spawn. It is a fantastic fish, and the most important fish in Norwegian history.

– SKREI –  Museum Nord’s big project in Vågan –

Museum Nord is building SKREI in Vågan. SKREI will be a centre for knowledge and experiences that conveys stories about the cod and cod fisheries – from the past, present and future.

John Andrew Wilhite is together with the artist Anastasia Savinova behind the sound and sculpture installation Dialects of the Deep, which will be part of the exhibition in SKREI.
