SKREI Opening week: Mini-seminar Cod and trust

As part of SKREI’s opening week, we invite you to a research seminar exploring the theme Cod and Trust – a mini-seminar on knowledge, management and cooperation surrounding the Arctic cod.
Where do we draw the line between what we know, what we believe, and what we have to trust?
For centuries, Arctic cod has been the foundation for livelihoods, value creation and communities along the Norwegian coast. Today, it is also the subject of advanced research and international cooperation. But managing cod stocks involves more than biological data and calculating quotas. It is also about trust – between researchers and fishermen, between research and management, and between countries that share the same waters and resources.
In collaboration with the Forskningsdagene, SKREI invites you to a mini-seminar exploring how knowledge about cod is produced, how it is used in fisheries management, and what happens when cooperation and trust are put to the test.
We will hear four different perspectives on cod and the people working to understand and manage it:
Bjarte Bogstad, Institute of Marine Research – Quotas, Arctic cod and international cooperation
How are quotas for Arctic cod determined? What knowledge forms the basis for these decisions, and how do Norway and other countries cooperate on a fish stock that moves across national borders?
Elena Eriksen, Institute of Marine Research – Ecosystem surveys: Understanding cod in context
Cod does not live in isolation. What do ecosystem surveys tell us about Arctic cod, its prey, other species and changes in the ocean? And how can a broader understanding of the ecosystem contribute to better fisheries management?
Côme Denechaud, Institute of Marine Research – Otoliths: A fish’s history in miniature
Inside a cod’s ear is a tiny structure made of calcium that can tell big stories. What can researchers learn from otoliths? What do they tell us about a fish’s age, growth, environment and migrations – and how can this knowledge help us understand Arctic cod?
Jennifer Thornhill Verma, award-winning journalist – Cod Moratorium: When the cod disappeared
In 1992, Canada introduced a historic moratorium on cod fishing off Newfoundland following a dramatic collapse in the stock. What happened, why did the collapse occur, and what can this story tell us about the relationship between research, politics, industry and trust?
Four perspectives – one shared challenge
From the quota table to the research vessel, from the fish’s earstone to the story of Newfoundland, we explore how knowledge is produced and how it comes to matter to the people who live from and alongside the sea.
When it comes to Arctic cod, trust ultimately comes down to something fundamental: Can we trust the knowledge we use to manage a resource that nature, fishermen and future generations all depend on?
Time: Wednesday 16 September at 17:30
Venue: The Otolith – Tangsprell, 2nd floor
Free admission. Welcome!
Organised in collaboration with the Norwegian Festival of Science and Technology.
