“Threads from the past” – Lecture and afternoon coffee with Åsa Elstad

Sunday 12 May17:00 - 18:30

The picture shows an excerpt of Åsa Elstad's book Threads from the past where you can see the title with the subtitle "Northern Norwegian clothing and handicrafts in textiles"

Welcome to a lecture with historian Åsa Elstad, at Øksnes Museum Sunday 12.5 at 17:00!

Åsa visits the museum to talk about textile traditions related to the northern Norwegian coastal culture, based on her recently published book Trådar frå fortida. We also get to look at typical historical textiles from Northern Norway.

The book is about clothing, the work that goes into making it, and its connection to women’s history, and goes through over 1000 years of textile tradition in the north. Clothing is a very exciting topic that tells a lot about who we are and what societies we live in.

“The textiles are linked to many aspects of Norwegian history, such as the division of labour, gender divisions, economic and social conditions and systems, resources, ethnicity and ideologies. The quarter chapter of the book has a recipe, a practical exercise for those who want to follow the textile artisans who have lived before us.”

The book can be bought in the museum shop before and after the lecture for those who are interested.

Welcome to the museum for a nice afternoon coffee with educational refills!

The event is carried out in collaboration with Alsvåg Vel and Øksnes Historielag, and takes place at Øksnes museum.
