SUMMARY:Lecture in Ballangen: Sami cultural heritage and Sami cultural monuments - is it now something to preserve?
DESCRIPTION:Ballangen Museum and Ballangen Bibliotek welcomes you to a lecture at the library! \nAbout the lecture: \nOfoten is often associated with mining\, the Ofoten Railway\, ore exports and war history. But the landscape around the Ofotfjord also contains a much older history: the Sami one. In this lecture\, archaeologist and senior advisor Arne Håkon Thomassen takes the audience on a journey through Ofoten’s Sami cultural heritage\, from place names\, cultural monuments and old traffic routes to traces of Sea Sami settlement and reindeer herding. Based on the landscape\, history and cultural monuments\, the lecture asks why this cultural heritage is important to know\, understand and preserve\, and what it can tell us about Ofoten’s identity today. The lecture invites reflection on how we shape the narrative of the past\, and which stories are included in our collective memory. \nAbout the speaker:\nArne Håkon Thomassen is an archaeologist and senior adviser at the Sami Parliament. For many years\, he has worked with Sami cultural monuments\, cultural environments and cultural history\, and is concerned with how cultural heritage can contribute to increased knowledge\, understanding and belonging.

SUMMARY:The Lutefisk Festival at SKREI
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the Lutefisk Festival at SKREI! \nLutefisk has its origins in the Northeast Arctic codfish\, which swims over 1000 km to Lofoten every year from the Barents Sea to spawn. Over the centuries\, the fish has been dried and further processed as part of Norwegian food culture. And in the lutefisk\, this history meets both raw material\, craftsmanship\, tradition and celebration. \nIn collaboration with the Lutefisk Festival and Classic Norway\, we invite you to a three-course dinner in Museum Nord’s new grand venue Otolitten\, in Restaurant SKREI. Here we serve a traditional lutefisk meal with storytelling and something good to drink – in surroundings where the history and importance of the cod are central. It was from this very place that stockfish really got a major role as a nation-builder. \nIn connection with the event\, guests will also have the opportunity to visit the rest of SKREI. Here you can explore the cod from several perspectives and through different disciplines – from nature and sea to fisheries\, culture\, history and food. Get to know the relationship between the cod and humans through 10\,000 years\, and how this migrating fish has left deep traces in life\, culture and society along the coast. \nThe Lutefisk Festival at SKREI is an opportunity to experience the story behind the raw material\, meet the people and traditions that have shaped it\, and gather around the dinner table to taste the result. We serve quality ingredients directly from Brødrene Andreassen\, Værøy. \nDinner package: Three-course experience incl. aperitif: NOK 1150 per person.\nAquavit tasting: NOK 325 per person. \nRegistration is sent to: booking@nyvagar.no\nAccommodation package available. For more information see: https://lutefiskfestivalen.no/product/lutefiskfestivalen-pa-skrei-i-kabelvag-lofoten-lordag-24-10-kl-1900-en-uforglemmelig-weekend \nArranged in collaboration between The Lutefisk Festival\, Classic Norway Hotels and Museum Nord.

SUMMARY:NMF Research Conference 2026
DESCRIPTION:Theme: Exhibition and research\nWhen: 29.- 30. oktober 2026\nWhere: SKREI\, Kabelvåg\, Lofoten \nThe professional section of the Norwegian Museum Association (NMF) invites museum employees and museum interested researchers to its annual\, national meeting place for knowledge production in the sector. This year’s conference has a special focus on the interface between exhibition and research\, and highlights exhibitions as a critical dissemination platform for solid\, research-based knowledge. \nIn collaboration with Museum Nord\, host of this year’s conference\, we will explore key questions facing the sector: \n\nResearch-based exhibitions: How do we build exhibitions on robust\, up-to-date\, and research-based knowledge?\nExhibitions as a research foundation and process: How can research be opened up to the public through the exhibition medium?\nInterdisciplinary collaboration\, synergy\, and power dynamics: How do we integrate research-based knowledge into interdisciplinary work\, and what success stories or challenges can we learn from?\nExhibition renewal: How can current research findings be used to update\, expand\, and revitalize existing and older exhibitions?\nStrong knowledge communication and new methods: Developing communication methods and best practices that are firmly grounded in recent research.\nCo-creation: The exhibition as an arena for participation\, community involvement\, and public debate. How can research be opened up to the public through the exhibition medium?\n\nThis conference is an important arena for developing and sharing reflective knowledge\, as well as strengthening the network of museum researchers\, who are often geographically dispersed across Norway. \nMeet us at SKREI \nWe are proud that this year’s conference will be among the very first events held in the Otolith\, the spectacular new museum building at SKREI in Kabelvåg. This is a unique opportunity to combine professional development with a visit to a forward-looking museum in the heart of Lofoten. \nClick here for registration and program

SUMMARY:Draugen Dag in the Norwegian Fishing Village Museum – with nisse in the lead role
DESCRIPTION:For the fifth year now\, we have had the tradition at the Norwegian Fishing Village Museum of arranging the Draugen Day at the end of October. \nHalloween is more and more popular among children and adults. We have thought it is a good time and opportunity to talk about supernatural beings\, folklore\, stories and legends from Lofoten and Northern Norway. \nOn this day\, we decorate the museum with (slightly) scary and mysterious decorations. Visitors can find activities associated with Draugen and other figures from folklore. We focus on a new being every year. This year’s supernatural being is: nisse.
