From very early on, cars were occasionally lifted on board and transported on the front deck of the Hurtigruten ships, but it was not until the early 1980s that a proper solution for driving cars on board was put in place.
Then it has always been easier with a pedal bike.
If you were going to visit Aunt Jorunn for a few days in Ålesund or spend a couple of weeks in Hammerfest with Uncle Reidar, it was very good to bring your bike!
And of course, the bike needed its own ticket, where the ticket office on the quay had written with a pen which boat you were going to travel on, what date the journey was going to take place, and of course signed the ticket.
