The fish hook in Langenesvær

In the coat of arms of Øksnes municipality you can see two fish hooks pointing away from each other. The visual expression is striking, and aims to anchor today’s municipality to the past, to the history of the region.

The symbol on the municipal coat of arms is taken from one of the objects in the collection at the museum in Øksnes.

The fish hook came to the museum in 1981, after being dug up in a potato field in the medieval fishing village of Langenes. There has always been fishing in Øksnes and Langenes, and this is something the population of today are rightly proud of. The fishing hook from Langenesvær has become a symbol of the history and identity of Øksnes, and we are proud to safeguard it
