Lofotr Viking Museum
Meet the Vikings. Smell the tar, taste the food, feel the history. The Vikings have been awaiting you for more than 1000 years. Welcome to the Viking age.
In the Visitor Center at Lofotr Viking Museum (the glass courtyard) there is a three-part, permanent archaeological exhibition. First, a room about the discovery and excavations of the longhouse. Then an atmospheric fictional film about people and events at Borg in the Viking Age. Finally, you can see a collection of unique archaeological finds from Borg and surrounding areas.
PRE-SHOW ROOM
In the first room, we show an introduction about the site (Borg in Lofoten), the excavation and the historical context. Through short films, the archaeologists explain about the find and the significance of Lofotr, in a larger perspective. In the middle of the room is a tractor that illustrates the background to why and how archaeological excavations started here in the early 80s.
FILM IN THE AUDITORIUM
In the auditorium, a short fictional film (approx. 12 min) is played with the title “The Dream of Borg”. The film is based on interpretations of Olav Tvennumbrunni and the unification of the realm, and recreates an interpretation of the atmosphere and life at Borg in the Viking Age.
ARCHAEOLOGICAL EXHIBITION
Here you can see original objects, including finds from the archaeological excavations that were carried out in the period 1983-1989 at Borg and in the surrounding area. In this room, gullgubber, pottery shards, jewelry, sword grips and other finds related to the Viking Age from Borg and other areas both near and far are on display.
About the audio guide system
The exhibitions and film can be experienced using your own smartphone and headset/earbuds.
You put on headphones and choose what you want to hear about – whether it is stories from the discovery of the Chieftain’s House at Borg or the objects in the archaeological exhibition. You can also listen to the movie “The Dream of Borg” through your own smartphone. Choose from six different languages. The use of a smartphone does not incur internet/roaming costs as we offer free Wi-Fi in the exhibition.
