The Hurtigruten Museum at Stokmarknes opened in September 2021. NOK 200 million has been invested in a new architecturally beautiful building, new exhibitions and public offerings to highlight this important national coastal and transport history. The museum is a complex facility consisting of the landed Hurtigruten ship MS Finnmarken from 1956, a salon from DS Finmarken from 1912, as well as older and new buildings with architectural value. The museum will be under major development in the coming years, and we aim to become a leading museum for Norwegian coastal shipping history.

Melbu is home to the museums Neptune Herring Oil Factory and Melbo Manor. Neptun Herring Oil Factory was founded by the “Nesse King” and industrial pioneer Christian Frederiksen in 1910 and was then considered the country’s most modern herring oil factory. The facility was protected by the Directorate for Cultural Heritage as a technical-industrial cultural monument in 2019. Melbo Manor shows where Christian Frederiksen and his family lived. Both facilities are also two large museums that need supervision and repairs, and we also want to develop these facilities further.

Depending on the season, between 30-50 people work at the three museums. The museums are part of the Museum Nord Foundation, which operates 21 museums in Ofoten, Lofoten and Vesterålen.
