Jenegga

This tale is from Bø in Vesterålen

An old man lived at Jennen farm in Bø with his two sons. One night, a creature came to him in a dream. It asked him to load seven wooden barrels onto his boat the next day, and to row out so far that “the Jenntin’ peak reaches the Malnes mountain, and the Saspontin’ peak rises over Gaukværøya island.” There he would find the best fishing spot in Vesterålen.

The man rose early, hauled the barrels onto his boat and rowed out to sea with his sons. They were far from the shore when he asked them to look for the landmarks from the dream. When they finally reached the spot, they filled the boat with fish, and a breeze helped them on their way home.

Without warning, a huge beast charged towards them. The man threw a barrel into its gaping mouth, which it began ripping apart. The three men continued their journey to the shore, but after a while, the beast returned to attack them. Another barrel was thrown, and they continued. As they went, the attacks persisted. When the creature approached for the eighth time, the man was out of barrels. However, he knew that steel and iron would harm such a beast, and threw his knife into its mouth. The creature cracked and turned into a skerry just off the island of Frugga in Hovden. The old man’s fishing place is known as Jenegga.
