Melbo Manor

From quiet farm to a small industrialized city within a few decades (1890–1920). The businessman and landowner Chr. Frederiksen was in the center of the activities. Visit the mansion that has been restored to it´s former glory.

Take a look at more of what can be found in the museum garden:

Elm

Elm belongs to the heat-loving deciduous trees, which means that the trees must have hot summers and short winters. In Norway, elm is primarily found in the coastal areas of the Oslo Fjord, Southern Norway, Western Norway, Trøndelag and in Nordland north to Beiarn.

Ash

Ash is a heat-loving hardwood, which means that they will have hot summers and short winters. Ash is planted in Northern Norway.

Hops

Hops are a perennial climbing plant that grows impressively fast. In Norway, hops are quite common as a wild plant north to Nordland.

Summer oak

Oak is the tree species in Norway that achieves the longest life expectancy and that takes the longest time from it dies until all the wood is gone. Summer oak can grow to around 30 meters tall.

Larch

Larch belongs to the pine family and grows only in the northern hemisphere. Siberian larch, which grows in the garden of Melbo Manor, will perhaps grow to 5-25 meters tall.

Earthworms

We have at least 19 different earthworm species in Norway and they do one of the world’s most important jobs for us humans to be able to grow food.

Mill

A mill is used to grind the grain into flour. At Melbo Manor there has been such a farm mill and we can still see remains of it down by the stream.

Settlement mound

The settlement mound on which Melbo Manor stands is approx. 100 meters long and 50 meters wide.
