NMF Research Conference 2026

The professional section of the Norwegian Museum Association (NMF) invites museum employees and museum interested researchers to its annual, national meeting place for knowledge production in the sector. This year’s conference has a special focus on the interface between exhibition and research, and highlights exhibitions as a critical dissemination platform for solid, research-based knowledge.
In collaboration with Museum Nord, host of this year’s conference, we will explore key questions facing the sector:
- Research-based exhibitions: How do we build exhibitions on robust, up-to-date, and research-based knowledge?
- Exhibitions as a research foundation and process: How can research be opened up to the public through the exhibition medium?
- Interdisciplinary collaboration, synergy, and power dynamics: How do we integrate research-based knowledge into interdisciplinary work, and what success stories or challenges can we learn from?
- Exhibition renewal: How can current research findings be used to update, expand, and revitalize existing and older exhibitions?
- Strong knowledge communication and new methods: Developing communication methods and best practices that are firmly grounded in recent research.
- Co-creation: The exhibition as an arena for participation, community involvement, and public debate. How can research be opened up to the public through the exhibition medium?
This conference is an important arena for developing and sharing reflective knowledge, as well as strengthening the network of museum researchers, who are often geographically dispersed across Norway.
